On 17th July 1975, the American Apollo and Soviet Soyuz spacecraft docked while orbiting 229 km above the Earth. Far below them, the Cold War would not officially end until the fall of the USSR in 1991, but the handshake between Aleksey Leonov and Tom Stafford – in the specially designed corridor between the two ships – marked the beginning of more than four decades of collaboration between Russian and American space agencies.

Space has an unusual ability to bring us together. It is entirely possible that without the military and political posturing on either side of the Iron Curtain, space exploration would not be nearly as advanced as it is today.
