Sometimes a magazine will get away from you. You’ll know which elements you want to include cheese and châteaux for example yet certain unforeseen themes keep popping up. Scenes and angles re-appear, locations aren’t what you expect, images arrive in colours utterly unanticipated, and as those early layouts begin to amass you suddenly find yourself worlds away from the project you first imagined.
The magazine you hold was one I lost control of.
Which is odd, as France is a country I thought I knew quite well (by default of it only being a Eurostar away). I was expecting pages filled with snow-dusted chalets, Michelin-starred fare and provincial excellence. And while these do make appearances, it seems instead that this issue is largely dedicated to mountains, wild spaces and the adventurous.
But rather than panic about the dominance of all things green in my pages, I began to wonder if this alternative view of France a mix of the bucolic and extreme - was in fact the correct one...
